Captain Marvel No Spoiler Movie Review:
Marvel is back with its latest tent pole picture, holding up the MCU until Avengers: Endgame releases next month. Captain Marvel stars Oscar winner Brie Larson as the eponymous hero, a woman – Carol Danvers – who is essentially filling out her own origin story, with glimpses into memories in our world and others, past and present. That’s where we’ll leave that, because, spoilers.
I’m not going to go into detail, because it’s difficult to broach much without entering into spoiler territory. I found Captain Marvel engaging on many levels. It’s got action, humor, great characterisation, an awesome soundtrack and most importantly depth.
The supporting cast, including the elegant Annette Benning also deserve a mention, just stellar. It was great to get a little character history on Nick Fury and the banter between the pair really added to things (again, I’m leaving it there). Interestingly there was no love interest like in DC’s Wonder Woman…. WHAT?! Yup, can you believe it, Captain Marvel passed the Bechdel Test…. believe me, I’m as stunned as you are, but very very happy. We may have turned a corner in film making (but probably not).
I’m sure the online hate / negative reviews that appeared PRIOR to the films release will continue to have a mouthpiece, but that really says far more about those spouting it, than it does about the film itself. Larson was a tour de force and embodied all facets of the character, a wonderful performance (unsurprising given her acting record).
I know it seems an obvious statement to make, but this film is so important for little girls. During one set piece I couldn’t stop thinking about my granddaughter and how this may be a turning point. Who knows, by the time she’s an adult, perhaps female leads will make up more than the approximate 15% they presently do, or the less than 1% of action heroes.
Captain Marvel was a hit for me, just make sure you stay for the two end credit scenes. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it too.
Thanks for reading and take care of yourself.
