I will preface this post by saying I LOVE the new “Tomb Raider” game and I’ve loved almost all previous games in the franchise since I had the first one on the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation. I love almost everything about the new “Tomb Raider” game and completed it to 100% days after getting it. I am thinking of making that cool axe Lara uses, but for now wanted to start something smaller, so I went with Lara Crofts pendent necklace that she wears in the game. I scooped up all the art shots I could find and set to work.
Sometimes even the smallest things can take you the longest time to make. Take this Lara Croft pendent necklace prop for example, it’s a few cm’s across and it took longer to do than it did to do some full prep work for a full sized prop O_o. The problem with small things is, they need to be smooth and working with clay you get all sorts of imperfections, enter Monster Clay.
If you haven’t heard of this stuff and you’re into sculpting you need to get yourself some, this made this Lara Croft pendent so much easier to cope with than regular clay (and thanks Edes for the actual photos and measurements!). The thing with Monster Clay I’ve found most useful is the heat in your fingers makes it more pliable and therefore easier to smooth and if you need a smooth finish on something small, you can also use your regular tiny metal sculpting tools and with a handy cup of hot water almost turn them into laser cutters.
This will never be perfect if you’re working on something small that needs to be extremely precise, but this is the best you’re going to get right here, this stuff can be smooth and with a little buffing of your resin pull, it’s almost like glass. Case in point….
I’ve made a few of these now and got the proper leather thong to attach to it, making it pretty much a 1:1 of the ingame necklace! If you want a Lara Croft Tomb Raider pendent necklace from the new game I will be adding them to my Prop Shop when I get time, in the meantime you can just email me to order one.
