How to get your iPad to play avi files from a USB drive

Hello fellow tech geeks. Today we are going to learn how to get your iPad to play avi files direct from a usb drive, by using the handy iPad Camera Connection Kit. You will need a jailbroken iPad, which is apparently legal thanks to the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) and fair use, though it still voids your Apple warranty).

Right, so how do you get your iPad to read avi files off a usb drive? Simple! grab your camera connection dongle, plug it in, stick your usb in with some avi files on it (obviously). Make sure you’ve got the cydia app iFile on your iPad along with the regular Apple app OPlayerHD (Lite or otherwise).

Open iFile and when you touch flash drive, then one of the .avi file names the dialogue pops up asking you what to open it with, touch OPlayerHD and wait. Waiting is the most important step because it takes a good ten seconds or so. A lot of people think this method doesn’t work because they simply didn’t wait for the file to load.

The avi files play well off the usb on the iPad, the framerate isn’t too bad, with the only noticeable slowdown on any panning sections.

  1. playing avi files on your ipad has been made a lot easier now with VLC app getting a release. Still not from usb though which sucks. What are apple scared off. The only thing letting the ipad down is not being able to load files, photos, videos, music off a usb direct to device unless you jailbreak. Come on apple we need a little give here, I’m looking at other tablet options because the ipad is so closed off.

  2. I just use the VLC app now, but it would be better to use the camera adapter to play avi files. I wish apple would open things up a little more so I didnt have to consider the jailbreak and cydia option.

Hi, I can’t really say it more clearly than the article already does. You need your iPad jail broken for this to work and this is something I don’t recommend unless you know what you’re doing (you will need to use Cydia). You might be better off looking for conversion software, to make the files more iPad friendly.

So you have VLC? You shouldn’t need to mess with Cydia or the camera connector to play avi files if you managed to grab VLC when it released?
If you have OPlayer installed, when you click on the avi file name an option box should pop up asking you what App to use? Is it the proper OPlayer from the App store you have installed? Failing that, try changing where the files are stored on the usb, try a directory, or root.

    Good luck

I insert my sd card containing my films, open ifile which shows all the files in their mp4 format. unfortunatly when i click on one it gives me the option to open using either video player or download HD (not vlc or oplayer even though I have both installed) if i click on video player is opens the player and starts playing the film (i cannot see or hear the film but can see the progress bar moving along. However is simply stated tv connected, the video is being played on the tv…..there is no tv connected, please help its driving me mad, ive been searching you tube and the internet for hours and everyone states open the files as I have done and should work but i keep getting told its playing on the tv Arghhhh any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Roxanne,
I would love to help you… I know there’s nothing worse than being stuck and the almighty internet being of no help, but it’s been so long since I wrote this post I haven’t had to do it for years. It sounds like a weird Airplay issue if it thinks it’s streaming to the TV, have you checked your Airplay settings?

If you have VLC installed, a better way of doing it is just to copy the files to your iPad through iTunes, then you can just load them into VLC no problem.

    Hope that’s of some help.
